Last month, the Robert Half agency sent out its “IT Hiring and Skills Report,” with results showing that most CIO’s surveyed “plan to maintain” their company’s staffing levels, at least through the third quarter of this year; the survey is conducted by an independent research firm.
What’s more, 76% of the 1,400 execs at the technology companies surveyed are “somewhat or very optimistic” over the chances for growth in their sector of business over the next three months.
Perhaps more telling is the 82% of the respondents who are very positive when it comes to “their firms’ third-quarter investment in IT projects.”
To Half’s credit, the agency has been tracking “IT hiring activity” in the United States going back to 1995.
A summary of the survey’s key findings include:
Anticipated hiring: It’s not a dramatic drop, but the report’s 1% “increase in anticipated IT hiring” is down 2 points from the projected hiring trend in the last quarter.
Maintaining levels? A whopping 89% of those CIOs surveyed are hoping to keep their current staffing levels where they are...this is an in crease of 4 points over the previous quarter.
More specifically, the categories deemed most active include “networking, data/database management and help desk/technical support professionals.”
Where are the skilled workers? Will there always seem to be a lack of “skilled professionals” in the IT arena? “7%...said it’s challenging to find (them)...” which is up 5 points over the previous quarter’s measurement.
Growth prospects? Over the next three months, confidence is rising among those CIOs surveyed: 76% are “somewhat or very confident” in outlook for growth; this compares 87% in the past quarter.
Future IT investment. Perhaps this is the real take away from this survey in that 82% of those tech professionals interviewed show an increase in confidence that, yes, their companies will be “making investme nts in IT projects in the third quarter,” which clocks in 5 points higher than the previous three months.
