Whenever some task is started, there are two possibilities, it either fails or gives the desired results. Moreover, there are always causes of success and failure of procedures. The causes of failure must be dealt in a professional manner so as to avoid such situations in future. Here, we will be talking about the causes of failure of a consultancy project. I will be sharing one of my experiences here from an IT project that I did years and years ago.
I used to work with one of my clients and my relation with him was very good and no doubt it is still the same as it was before. We had been working with each other for a few years at this point. Once, he gave me a project in which he demanded me to develop a framework for the future software development to bridge their existing technology and the one they wanted to add to their system. I was very happy to get that project. Both of us made a proper strategy and as per the agreed terms and conditions, I started working on the design of the software.
Shortly after we got started we came across several issues. Although we solved them new issues would later come up that broke new grounds for the project. No doubt I was capable enough to solve these issues but at the same time, I needed more time to fix those bugs. In the end, the client decided to end the project in scarp and he did so. He thought that investing more time and finance in the project was of no use and he wasn't sure the project was still a priority for the company. He did not say anything to me but I knew the project did not go as we both planned. Although the client is still very friendly to me he did not use my services for a while after that. After that project I spent a fair amount of time thinking why that project didn't turn out right. I started taking close notice of all the things and came to know that underlined are the major causes of the failure of the project that can be termed as the failure to any IT consulting project.
- Time that the project took was more than usual. It is because time is an asset and no one has enough time to spend on the same project. Thus, people want to get the perfect job done in the shortest span of time. When I took more than usual, it made the client think that it will not work and thus being hopeless he took that step.
- In order to avoid failure, one must get out of the pass and fail attitude. Each and every step should be taken as a complete success of the overall project. Only with this attitude, one may end up in making a successful project.
- The project can never be a priority for the consultant until and unless it becomes priority of the client.
Thus, in short, what I learnt from this project was that I should break the projects into manageable chunks and that I must update the client with the progress at every step. I do not feel ashamed in telling and admitting the fact that this failure made me a better consultant in the end and this knowedge has been applied to future similar projects that have found success.
