Denver Storage Architects...Sounds like people who design and build those self storage places on the outskirts of town. Since this is an information technology blog, you probably recognize that those aren't what we are talking about.
Here is what we mean by "storage architects": the information explosion has spawned the need to keep a handle on the data and content information systems spew out by the gigabytes. Storage architects design ways to store, protect, and access that data.
They tame the tiger of information inundation by designing and building central database systems to keep track of compliance, financial, accounting, HR, legal, and other data across a variety of key areas. Not only do they design these systems, they analyze data, determine key requirements for storage and access, and then communicate that to clients and users.
Some terms you will run across when reading about information storage:
- NAS (Network Attached Storage): A computer connected to a network that only provides file-based data storage services to other devices on the network. It provides both storage and a file system.
- DAS (Direct Attached Storage): An extension to an existing server and is not necessarily networked.
- SAN (Storage Area Network): Provides only block-based storage and leaves file system concerns on the "client" side.
- Cluster NAS: NAS that is using a distributed file system running simultaneously on multiple servers. The key difference between a clustered and traditional NAS is the ability to distribute (e.g. stripe) data and metadata across the cluster nodes or storage devices.*
Your business is based on information and data. Data grows exponentially with business growth. In order to continue to offer effective service to your customers, you need to be able to access and crunch that data from a well-organized database.
